i actually liked the stone giant fight, that was part of the book which i appreciated in the film moondog Send a noteboard - 08/01/2013 09:47:18 PM
as to the rest:

3D -- unnecessary
48fps -- unnecessary
fight scenes -- unnecessary (and too cartoon-ish taboot)
azog -- unnecessary
radagast -- unnecessary
rabbit sleigh -- unnecessary
three installments -- unnecessary; but too late to stop that now....

throughout most of the movie, the dwarves ended up being nothing more than frat boy douchebag warrior archetypes. the dwarves of the book were so much more respectable, but then i hardly expected jackson to stick to the characterizations that tolkein used.

all in all, the vast majority of this movie was nothing more than a complete rewriting of the original book with 21st century mannerisms and dialogue. the riddles in the dark was probably the most faithful the movie was to the book, and even that was royally screwed up by having gollum say "time's up!". they also screwed up my most favorite line from the whole book "is it scrumptiously crunchable?" but i can hardly expect them to add ONE. SINGLE. WORD. to an already 3 hour movie, can i?

i also hated the editor for creating a string of scenes no longer than 30 seconds each. just when i started to focus on a scene, it jerked away to a different angle. then it jerked again to an even more different angle. then it went to something unrelated for a few seconds so that it could jerk back to the original scene for another 5-10 seconds. stupid editing took away too much from the pace of the story. get a couple of long shots in there. use a crane. SOMETHING!

if i were to rate this movie from 1-10, 10 being the best score, i would give it 3.5. only because about 35% of the movie showed reverence to the original book. the rest was tripe and only included to get people to see this movie NOW. in 3-6 years this will not be looked back on as a "classic" other than the morbid curiosity of the first 48fps film commercially released by hollywood.
