View original postAll that stuff you mention was ridiculous and over the top. I saw the movie three times. Slept soundly through the dwarves' messing around with Smaug twice.

Would you say you enjoyed the movie, even so? I just don't get the decisions they made - the Smaug bit must have been a huge chunk of the budget, and you're happy to sleep through it.
View original postThe golden statue - what they did was pour melted gold into an empty form. It held for a moment, then collapsed.

Makes more sense, but again. That's ridiculous. There was a perfectly built and ready-to-function mold for a giant gold statue, ok. Thorin knew where it was after not being there for most of his life, ok. Thorin knew how to turn on the forges, ok. After that, holy hell.
View original postI did enjoy the barrel scene. The fat dwarf twirling was unnecessary, but the elves hunting orcs was awesome. This is how I explain improbabilities in movies: it was probably not as easy as that (they fell out of barrels, had to climb back in, etc...), the movie just doesn't show all that, and focuses on only the highlights.

Oh my goodness, I couldn't stand it. The highlights like when the fat dwarf jumped back into one of those barrels? And honestly, I love when elves get to be graceful badasses, but I can think of a million other ways they could improve on how to show it. He made them fakey and silly.
