Is there really some big mysterious purpose in the missing passengers or were Maggie Grace, Michelle Rodriguez et al not available?

And one of them cites the undersea island saying "It looks like New Otherton got built" which suggests he believes the bomb might have changed that. Except that place was built by the Dharma folks long before the bomb, so why would it not be there?



But given that the plane 'trip' in this episode was different than the one in the pilot, I'd say it was intentional rather than just not being able or willing to get the actresses.
