There is a longstanding (and apparently increasing of late) occurrence of inferior movies winning. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 06/03/2010 10:33:15 PM
Also, please explain what is wrong with these:

In 1962, Lawrence of Arabia beat The Longest Day and To Kill a Mockingbird*

Longest Day was superior. Setting aside all other issues, there was the "Did not put young Cannoli to sleep" issue.

In 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest* beat Jaws

JAWS. Come on! Have you no soul?

In 1993, Schindler’s List beat The Fugitive

Don't even go there - this is one of the prime examples of the farcical rule that if you want an Oscar, go the Holocaust route.

In 1995, other movies were nominated against Braveheart

It was an insult. It suggested that those other movies were somehow in a similar class with Braveheart.

In 2001, A Beautiful Mind beat Fellowship of the Ring

ABM was a lame, boring, BS movie about one guy's ego. The entire movie was revealed to have not actually taken place. This is viciously attack whenever it is utilized as a plot device in sci-fi, but if you put the industry aristocrats together on a film using the same lame things it's suddenly perceived as introspective and groundbreaking and all kinds of other crap.

In 2003, Return of the King beat Mystic River and Seabiscuit

Well, maybe you don't have to explain this one. Still, mystic river wasn't exactly a very good movie... and I haven't seen seabiscuit. It was a movie about playing with food, right?
Still better quality than RotK. That was simply the worst of the trilogy. It was overlong and lazy and coasted way too much on the goodwill earned by its superior predecssors.

Based on this historical trend, Avatar, District 9 or Ingloious Basterds will beat the Hurt Locker.

I haven't seen the hurt locker, actually, so I can't comment.
It was, unlike the other films, actually good, interesting, suspenseful and contained sympathetic and engaging characters.
