I guess this for a few reasons:

1) Desmond just got thrown down a well on the Island, so it makes us assume vengeful motives (we don't know WHY he did it, and we know the writers like twists)

2) Locke originally regained his mobility after a traumatic accident - the plane crash

3) We saw a similar shot of his face, post-accident, and it reminded me of right after the crash

4) If nothing else, it makes Locke's story not so über depressing
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
