If Fain would really be the key to defeat the DO in the end, as some people believe, it would be too much remind of LotR. Of course, RJ said that Fain is a wildcard outside the structure of the story. That implies that Fain won't play a major part in the end.

I think Moiraine's capture and rescue storyline isn't really that similar to what happened to Gandalf.
