It's definitely possible, but I think they had a different end goal in mind. Since they weren't dealing with trying to purify saidin as Rand and Nynaeve did, they only had to worry about a small fraction of it, allowing them to worry less about destroying the taint entirely and more about keeping it away from a tiny concentration of saidin.
