Min also says that Rand will die, in her Alivia viewing. Nicola sees Rand as the one who is dead yet lives, and the Wise Ones recognize that body as Rand.
Which fits with the Aelfinn interpretation. That is, Rand's body dies, so it's Rand who dies. That satisfies Min's Alivia viewing (assuming she helped Rand's body die), Nicola's foretelling, and the WOs dream.
The "confused" part is Min's viewing of the merger and her interpretation of it. In that case, Rand's body dies, but Rand is the one who ultimately continues to exist (to Min, the one who lives), and Moridin the one who ultimately ceases to exist (to Min, the one who dies). In this case, the death of Rand's body is irrelevant to the who dies and who lives part of the viewing. It's only relevant to how the merger ultimately completes (and to Min's viewing of Alivia).
Also, if the Aelfinn are aware of the circumstances by which Rand must die in order to live, then it seems unlikely they would be confused on the matter.
As I said above, the idea is that it's Min's viewing of the merger that is "confused", not the Aelfinn interpretation.
And finally, IMO it cheapens the sacrifice that Rand must make if he does not actually die. I realize there is little difference in the end, but...
I don't see that it cheapens the sacrifice, since he'd still be dying without having any idea what would happen next, but I understand what you mean. The main problem I have with it is if Rand's soul ends up in Moridin's body, it's akin to Transmigration (event though the DO wouldn't be involved in what I suggested) - i.e. a soul taking over someone else's body. That's been portrayed as an evil thing the DO does to resurrect his minions, and therefore doesn't seem an appropriate fate for one of the good guys. Then again, Rand has murdered his share of the Forsaken, and murder is an evil thing the Shadow does, too. So maybe Rand taking over a Forsaken's body in particular shouldn't be considered "evil". Except, Moridin got that body from a captured non-DF, presumably, so Rand would end up getting a body that once belonged to a fellow "good guy", which is "evil". So, depends on how you want to look at it.
Whereas the rip-from-TAR idea has no such thematic problems.
