In fact, her devotion to them could be considered to be a result of losing her family at such a young age and having responsibility heaped upon her for others at a similarly young age. For anyone with an innate desire to care and heal, this could easily create the level of devotion she has towards "her people". I don't think anyone could argue that Nynaeve wasn't one of the most caring people in the series, even if she's an angry SOB sometimes :P
