I think Nicola was much the same as Masema, Asunawa and Aram. I would put money on the abrupt, unclimactic deaths being Jordan's way of expressing his wartime experiences.

In fact, these deaths get bonus points from be because unlike so much of ToM, they don't seem contrived and overstated, but actually feel more subtle, more like Jordan's original writing.
