They believe Oaths necessary, thus an Aes Sedai refusing sets herself apart from and above the rest. Joel Send a noteboard - 16/12/2010 02:26:45 PM
Not because refusal to do so would "un-Aes Sedai" her (it doesn't seem to have done so with Siuan, or Leane or, um, a certain uppity Two Rivers Amyrlin... ;)) but because it would've put her more in the role of that vigilante. She would be going rogue, denying the authority of both Tower and Amyrlin. Aes Sedai swear the Three Oaths; an Aes Sedai who refuses to do so repudiates one of their core principles. She'd still be Aes Sedai, but an Aes Sedai who wants to make her own rules every bit as much as Elaida and every bit as much to the Towers detriment. You know what would make the world even MORE suspicious than they already are of Aes Sedai who deceive and prevaricate to maintain nominal adherence to the Three Oaths? Catching an Aes Sedai in a lie that "proves" the vaunted Three Oaths are just another lie.

Um...err have you forgotten the Black Ajah? The Three Oaths are a farce and the only reason they are 'needed' is because the Aes Sedai dug their own grave over the past 3,000 years. The only reason the Criminal Binder is still 'needed' and in use today is because the Aes Sedai believe it needs to be. If you agree with them and think the Binders needed for Oaths, which ironically makes the Oaths worthless...then continue to believe that I suppose.

This isn't even touching on the fact that they lose half their life (which they seem to care less about...how believable is that btw?) and creates xenophobia in the people due to the ageless look. All the reasons the Aes Sedai use for justfying using their 'Oath Rod' are completely wrong on some level imo.

No, I'm not forgetting the Black Ajah, and an argument can be made that they remain Aes Sedai without the Oaths; do you think that comparison would in any way HELP someone make a case to the Tower against the Oaths?

"Aes Sedai don't NEED the Oaths; the Black Ajah does fine without them!"

"Good point, Sister.... *couDARKFRIENDgh*"

I don't like the Oaths and think they should be rescinded; if she really examined her own thoughts Egwene would realize she does, too, or she wouldn't be considering allowing Sisters to be released from the Oaths and retire with the Kin (of course, there's no way to know the life shortening damage won't have already been done, isn't done when the Oaths are sworn, and the Kin probably see a larger role for themselves than a glorified Aes Sedai nursing home, but otherwise it's an ideal solution. :P) HOWEVER, until/unless that happens neither Nynaeve nor any other Aes Sedai can be allowed to decide herself too good for the same authoritative rule to which every other Sister submitted. As I said to Cannoli, had Nynaeve balked on the basis that the Oaths themselves are wrong, not just for her, but for everyone, I'd be on her side (though she would've lost because Egwene and everyone else with the power to change things still consider them legitimate). Making an exception just for her is out of the question though: All Aes Sedai swear the Three Oaths, until/unless no Aes Sedai swear any Oaths.

*shrugs* ... the oaths are lame and so full of holes the only value they bring is - 07/12/2010 03:26:21 PM 869 Views
I wonder what would have happened if she refused and left the tower entirely. - 07/12/2010 03:30:58 PM 867 Views
I doubt they would have stopped her ... but there was no real reason for her to refuse the - 07/12/2010 03:34:20 PM 822 Views
no there wasn't a real reason for her to refuse. It'd still be interesting if she did *NM* - 07/12/2010 03:37:45 PM 402 Views
would have made for an interesting spin on the plot - 07/12/2010 05:37:31 PM 833 Views

I think that is true of the testing not the Oaths - 08/12/2010 05:08:22 PM 771 Views
she shouldn't have, although I think they should trash the oaths in general - 07/12/2010 03:29:21 PM 782 Views
agreed! and I think Nynaeve's testing rather proved that point - 07/12/2010 03:35:38 PM 847 Views
Especially since Egwene herself didn't really think it necessary for herself to take the tests - 07/12/2010 03:43:18 PM 820 Views
