He first discovered his luck in Tar Valon, when he won dice game after dice game all night and then escaped the city on a ship. That was only a few days after being healed from his connection/dependency on the shadar logoth dagger. It was many months after that that he went with Rand to the Waste and entered Rhuidean.
He was pretty lucky as a kid too. IIRC he thinks to himself about all the times he got busted when he made plans to do some mischief, but things he did spur of the moment were the things he usually got away with.
