Observation! Repeated observation!
Whether you're talking about the stereotype of "the nuturing mother" or "the brave fire fighter" or any of the many "negative" stereotypes available.
Applying that kind of generalization to the individual can be bigotry, well for the negative ones anyway.
On the other hand you should never be SUPRISED by a stereotype.
That's like being suprised by rain falling from dark clouds. Sure it's doesn't ALWAYS rain when dark clouds are above you, but it does happen often enough to make grabbing your umbrella a no brainer.
