Do Min's viewings always predict the future, or do some tell about the past, mainly the seven towers around Lan in The Eye of the World?
ROBERT JORDAN
Um, her viewings are always concerning the future.

Again, he said the viewing concern the future, he never said the images with which the viewings are produced are from future events....

Min rarely ever sees glimpses from the future, she sees something more akin to symbols, which if decoded right reveals something that always concern the future of the person. Faile isn't a falcon, and Berelain isn't an hawk. It just represneted them, and that isn't about their future - Berelain has been a Paendrg since her birth, and Paendrags have been associated to the hawk sigil for a mellenia. The very same way, it's not because there's a baby that it is forcibly a baby from the future. The baby just represents something. Saying the baby can't represent Lan is like saying the Towers can't be Mlakier's because they're already in ruins and the viewing concerns the future. The Broken Crown can't be Saldaea because it's already broken, and so on.

Take my interpretation of the viewing for Lan. The baby and towers represent his oath, but the viewing concerns Lan's future. This oath was something he had chosen to put behind at the time, to follow Moiraine's greater cause, to fight the Shadow by serving her. In KOD, what Nynaeve did forced him to return to the letter of his oath of leading the Malkieri to avenge Malkier. I think this is what the viewing predicted, and it was about Lan's future.

Given that the Oath begins with, "To stand against the shadow so long as iron is hard and stone abides." I can't see how following Moiraine in any way goes against his Oath. In fact, as Moiraine points out at the end of New Spring, serving her gives him a battle he can win rather than an unmarked grave in the Blight.

That being said I could see these images still somehow referring to what Lan is going through now, in gathering forces and raising the Golden Crane. Also, I'm not entirely sure RJ actually had everything in tEotW fully thought through and may have had no intention of ever having these viewings fulfilled in the books.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.
