But Deepe would have no way of knowing the men against him were not from the BT. As far as the vast majority of WoT characters know the only male Channelers are the Asha'man and the Forsaken. There has been no hint from anyone of suspected others.

This is why I suspect Deepe was defending the Title of Asha'man ... He likely suspected Taim's cronies where the attackers.
