It was apparently Faulkner's desire to color-code the text based on the time, so Folio went and did it.
On the relative merit of Wheel of Time, it is obviously more complex than a D&D adventure. I might argue that the world building was very poorly executed (from the Tolkienesque shape of Randland to the absolutely abysmal Old Tongue and universal "modern" tongue), but the storytelling was generally good, at least for the first six books.

I've never been one who cares much (if at all) for "worldbuilding," as I see it as little more than setting on steroids, but yes, by the sixth volume (if not the fifth), the narrative "seams" were beginning to burst for me. More obvious when I re-read them two years ago.
