That Demandred at first controlled the Dragonsworn, who made much chaos (this fits with Sammael's comment about Demandred's friends in the south), and later additionally took Murandy to gather an army for the Shadow in the heart of the Westlands.
I think you're reaching for Murandy just because that's all that's left, but there might be other options, like the recalcitrant Aiel, the Land of Madmen, Seanchan, Shara etc. If Demandred appears with a maximum of 10,000 troops he'll be the laughing stock when Taim arrives with 500 dreadlords and Moridin with uncountable Shadowspawn.
As said, there are clues for Murandy and even if it isn't that big, the Shadow certainly wants to create chaos there as well. Demandred's clothes in KoD, ch.3, point to a court in the Westlands. The same applies to Demandred's comments that he is busy in WH (when Roedran suddenly started to gather his army) and in TGS, prologue, that he is still gathering and will be. It also seems possible that Graendal missed the army in Murandy, because she thinks the only army left are the Borderlanders.
As an assassin we see Slayer several times strike at people, also at those formerly associated with the Shadow (like the BA or Fain). Therefore it's actually obvious that someone used him to kill Asmo (likely Graendal).
Slayer is logical because he's a professional assassin but illogical because he wouldn't frighten Asmodean. Even Sorilea could take care of Slayer, and Asmodean could fight with the Power even in his weakened state. Asmodean showed before that, that he's only scared of the Dark One and the Chosen. That's why I've rejected options like Aviendha, Mat, Moiraine, Egwene... and Slayer. Even Slayer says that the Chosen are the only people in the world who dare command him - it's amusing to think that Asmodean would be terrified of the man if they walked into each other. Graendal, on the other hand, is a nasty piece of work and he'd dread her in his weakened state.
Suddenly meeting Slayer, who appears out of thin air and with a crossbow (likely with a poisoned bolt) in his hands pointed at you, means that someone big among the Shadow wants to see you dead. I don't see why this wouldn't immediately terrify Asmo. Slayer simply acted too quickly and surprisingly, so that Asmo couldn't do anything to save himself. He might have also confused Slayer for Lan or Rand at the first sight. Besides that, we still don't know, which gifts Slayer got from the DO besides using TAR.
So...who is Demandred disguised as and who do you think killed Asmodean NOW?
