Why not a ward that detects gateways, and alerts defending channelers so they can get there and disrupt the attacking gateway? The ward may offer some protection, making it slightly more difficult to weave a gateway, delaying enough for the defenders to get there in time, or it may not.

I don't think there's enough for us to know at this point. And perhaps you're all wrong and specific ter'angreal were crucial defending against attacking gateways. Who knows?
