He may have simply had a ward that detected channeling in a certain viscinity. However, I don't see why a ward couldn't be extended to detect particular types of weaves. Imagine a guy in a control center, watching a screen that monitored a "gateway-detection" ward. A gateway entrance opens somewhere, a point on the monitor blips, and anti-gateway actions are immediately taken. Of course this process could be made more efficient (i.e. individual channelers patrolling the areas could be atuned to the ward).
