It's definitely possible that there can be a ward to detect a gateway opening. Kronin al'Sulc Send a noteboard - 17/11/2009 03:22:33 PM
When Aviendha flees Rand via gateway from the Waste to Seanchan, the Seanchan learn of the channeling almost immediately.

I believe that the Seanchan have the entire continent warded so as to detect any "unauthorized" channeling from marath damane. First off, there's almost zero chance the Seanchan just happened upon the Gateway in the middle of the night. There was a giant blizzard that night and nobody would be out in that.

I admit it is possible they just stumbled upon the gateway in the early morning, but from the comments overheard by Rand and Aviendha it appears the Seanchan were alerted to Aviendha's channeling even though nobody was there and after they became aware of the channeling, the Seanchan sent some people to investigate it.

Maybe the Seanchan have figured out how to make ter angreal like the Guardian in Far Madding and perhaps they can triangulate channeling this way? Maybe the Seanchan have wards to detect unauthorized channeling to help them capture marath damane? Maybe they just stumbled upon Aviendha's gateway, but I think the evidence in the books strongly indicates they detected her gateway somehow and then sent people to investigate.

I seriously doubt any single damane could weave a single ward big enough to cover the continent. In fact, I know that's impossible. Anyway, I imagine a system where thousands and thousands of wards overlap one another, allowing the Seanchan to quickly determine the sector/location of the unauthorized channeling. It would be something similar to like what Rand says Sammael would have Illian warded. Rand had to send his men in to trigger all of Sammael's wardings. So we know for a fact (via Sammael) that warding an entire city is possible. And Sammael's wardings would allow him to instantly know exactly where the channeler was at. If that can be done with an entire city, why not an entire continent?

Assuming an area was warded to detect opening gateways, I believe it would only take some modification to alter the wardings to do more than just detect the gateways, but also to in some way interfere with them from opening.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

I don't believe you can just slightly modify this weave to block Traveling. The only ways I've heard to do that requires manipulation of the Pattern, and that just sounds ridiculous.
