Difference between actively and passively holding a shield?

Maybe there's a difference there because Nynaeve was actively holding the shield and reacting to Logain's attempts to escape. Plus, it was clear she could only hold on for a little while before he overwhelmed her, just as the sisters shielding Rand held for a little while before the shield was blasted.
