One to counter balance the effect that LTT was having. Rand realized that he couldn't run away from the Pattern or go against the Pattern, and it might be that LTT kept trying to do things his way against the pattern instead of with it. I don't really think there is enough information about the end of the Age of Legends to really make a good conclusion about it.
