It isn't that implausible that LTT's leadership was disputed, after many years of terrible war without a victory in sight and since the Light forces became thrown back again. One should also remember that LTT was probably very arrogant, so that he might angered other important politicians. That then eventually many in the Hall rather allied with Latra, apparently a charismatic leader and good speaker, also doesn't seem that far-fetched to me.

I never got the impression that LTT was that unpleasant? I mean if he was that arrogant and uncharismatic, how the hell did he get the job as the leader of the AS, the job leading the forces of light against the shadow and managed to get a reputation as the most prominent man of the age.

Besides, there were victories and I never got the impression that LTT was in any way incompetent. If it was the DO's influence that led to the defeats, how fair would it be to blame LTT?

That even some friends of LTT changed sides, and the Forsaken comment on LTT's arrogance. Of course, it's understandable since LTT was the most powerful man in the world. However, I think it's also human that this would eventually draw certain envy or dissents in the Hall, so that Latra could become such an important player. I also think it's human to blame the leader, if things aren't going very well, even if it might be unfair. It's similar to the politicians in our real life.

Anyway, that seems to be RJ's explanation and in the end we have to buy it.

Actually, its not RJ's explanation. It is the explanation of Jorille Mondevin, Royal Historian to the Court of Queen Ethenielle of Kandor. She found some ancient documents in a dusty storage room in Chachin and wrote the SaSG based on that.

Now yes, I am joking a bit here but that is the in-world explanation RJ used for the text. A historian found some scattered texts and remnants from AoL and wrote tSaSG based on that. This means that its not word-of-the-creator the way signing answers and the like, but rather similar to what characters in the books say, potentially wrong. This seems an obvious way to leave a potential loop-hole if he wanted to change things in later books. Or maybe he even planned it all ahead with deliberate flaws like the one I am suggesting.

IIRC, RJ precisely wrote Strike at SG to explain us in more detail, what happened before and during the Strike. I think it's certainly supposed to be canon.
