Or what if Ethenielle knows and carries these fragments with her?

Ethenielle Kirukon Materasu is not the current Queen of Kandor. I don't know how she can carry anything or show it to Rand at this point since she doesn't exist right now.

I think in the main series the full name is never given, it's just mentioned in the Guide and in SaSG. However, contrary to the Guide, RJ wrote SaSG himself and IIRC after the Guide. Thus I would say this rather indicates that the name in SaSG is the correct one. I also rather doubt that there are two Queens Ethenielle from different Houses, since RJ obviously wanted to imply that this text is more or less contemporary to the time of the main books.

SASG predates the version of the same story that Jordan tweaked for a chapter of the Guide.

SAG and the RPG give one name, the Guide have a new one. No doubt both names came from RJ, so we have no idea which name/house is the right one, though there's obviously an error as the RPG specifies this is the name of the current Queen, not an earlier/later Queen Ethenielle from a different House.

The name in the Guide sounds like the "final" one, though. The "earlier" name is in part very close to the name of a sword bearing female Hero of the Horn (Materasu vs. Amaresu, both of them distortions of the Sun Goddess Amataresu) and the House name Kirukon is just one letter away from the first name of Kirukan, who is given not as a House name but as an ancestor of Ethenielle in the series. Amaresu bears the Sword of the Sun, Kirukan had a legendary sword as well, and in legend she commanded the weather. It sounds possible that RJ hesitated at some point between making the Kandori Queen a descendant of a Hero or to give her another sword-bearing Warrior-Queen as ancestor. Either Jordan had multiple choices of names for her in his notes and gave one for the RPG, reused it in SASG then years later forgot about all that and gave the other one to Teresa P. for the Guide or, perhaps more likely, he forgot to put in his notes the name he had used for SASG and given for the RPG and when he worked on the Guide (as he was working on TPOD, in which Kirukan is mentionned) he created a new name and new backstory details for Ethenielle and this is also what he gave Teresa Patterson.

In the end, the "correct" name will be the one Harriet decides to use for the Encyclopedia. The one she will use will no doubt be the one RJ has left in his character file for Ethenielle.

This is not the only conflicting name in external sources vs. the series. RJ's notes for stuff that was used in the Guide or RPG don't seem as accurate/permanent/organized as notes for material he has actually used in the series itself and thus set in stone once and for all.

Until Ethenielle dies or is deposed, you cannot claim this has been written yet, much less published - 27/01/2010 03:05:49 AM 520 Views
