I think the breaking of the Tower was a way for the pattern to push Rand further away from Aes Sedai and make him less trustworthy of them. In doing this the pattern set up Rand as an independent force that did not rely on Aes Sedai and pushed him into making the Black Tower to get men channeling again. The pattern knows Rand will need every channeler possible at the last battle (we think anyway) and this way Rand can deal with the Tower from a position of extreme strength, instead of a single man who any 13 Aes Sedai could stop. I mean really, appointing a RED as Amyrlin with the Dragon Reborn? That screams "we want to control you, then gentle you immediately after you are no longer useful".

just my opinion....
