I am guessing that the oath to serve the dark one "till the hour of death" means that if they have renounced it in their last hour, their souls are free and they don't die as darkfriends, so the dark one can no longer take their soul. In Ingtar's case this happens by chance (or Taveren twisting). Verin probably knew that and planned accordingly.
"None are so far fallen into the Shadow that they cannot return to the Light." Or something like that. Right?
And Verin says,
"A curious hole in the oaths. To allow one to effect a betrayal in the final hour of one's life. I cannot help wondering if the Great Lord knows of it. Why wouldn't he close that hole?"
*slaps self on head*
He can't!
This may be the answer to Verin's question. Because the Creator built his system to reincarnate humans, the Dark One can only go so far to override that privelege. If he closed the loophole, the oath would be non-binding (or, at least, less binding).
Which would mean he's more the Father of Lies than the true Lord of the Grave.
