Could Moridin have intervened to save Graendal? water_weaver Send a noteboard - 27/02/2010 09:16:07 AM
In reading many of the posts regarding Graendal's fate I have noticed that many have been arguing, and rightly so, that Graendal is not omniscient and could not have possibly predicted Rand's actions. What about Moridin then? We know that Moridin and Rand are linked, could it therefore be possible that Moridin knew when and how Rand was going to kill Graendal and took steps to prevent this?

1) We know that Moridin has Moghedien mind trapped and that she knows compulsion. In the prologue of tGS Moridin comments how Graendal is better than Moghedien at her own game and this comment could be seen as indicating Moghedien is obsolete and now expendable. Foreshadowing indicating Moghedien will take the fall for Graendal or clever flattery?

2) Nynaeve comments on how the compulsion on Ramshalan is different than that placed on Kerb which possibly could indicate it was someone other than Graendal. (Yes, I know Graendal knows many degrees of compulsion and that's all this could be)

3) If Moridin could read Rand's thoughts he would know Rand fears Graendal and will not confront her directly and will remove her from afar. Moridin therefore also knows Rand won't be able to ID the person he is killing....except through compulsion. Moridin, has also conveniently told Rand that balefire means no return from the grave. Could this be Moridin planting the idea in Rand's head to use balefire against "Graendal" so as to maximize chaos?

Now I acknowledge there are some problems, the biggest being would Moridin be able to read Rand's mind/intentions through the bond. The other big one of course is that Moridin could very well want the other forsaken dead and gone permanently, henceforth the balefire revelation.

In regards to 1) I would like to point out Graendal most likely did not know Rand was coming after her and therefore Moridin really had no reason to try and manipulate her into staying in Arad Doman. Moridin knew she wouldn't confront Rand either way and that is why I personally believe that remark about Moghedien was meant to foreshadow.

Sorry for the length and thanks for reading
