He's never really shown much attraction to her, and he's quite fond of even the most average of women.


You may be right, but the Snakes at least left him preoccupied with his destiny and convinced that it must come true. Would have looked at Tuon twice had he not known about the prophecy? I honestly don't think so.


Mat's situation is not much different than what an arranged marriage might feel like. To say that- as blanket statement- love could not come from such a union would be simply untrue. Since it is possible to love in such a situation, your example of Mat knowing his fate (or for that matter, being fated in the first place) in advance does not preclude him to having genuine love for Tuon. What it did do was force him to be with her and get to know her.

As far as Mat not showing much attraction to her... well, I would just say you didn't pay close enough attention to his thoughts and actions in KoD. True, when he first lays eyes on her, he sees her as a childlike, unsympathetic, noblewoman. But their journey together shows him slowly being won over in (my opinion) a very natural and realistic fashion. I would say that he is falling in love with her despite the prophecy from the Snakes. Remember, Mat is not one to enjoy being told what to do.
