... I don't think it harms their souls, I believe they're just dead and their bodies aren't aware of it yet. Like zombies, maybe.
As to the rest, souls are pretty much a recipe for confusion as far as I'm concerned, I just accept that as part of the magic in this fantasy universe, and don't question it too far.
