Killing people doesn't destroy their soul, so abortion wouldn't either. Gher Send a noteboard - 04/03/2010 05:29:04 PM
I'm not getting into the abortion debate, but it wouldn't harm the Pattern any more than killing someone would. Their soul can still be reborn later. It can still be morally wrong but not harm the Pattern.

Randland has reincarnation. If your body gets destroyed on the 2nd Age, the Pattern (or the DO, or the Wheel, or something) snatches your soul and can insert it into your reborn body on some other Age. Which gives me a rather nasty thought of some universal soul-enema. But anyway, this made me think something else, too, and I thought I'd post a few questions.

The DO snatches souls. The Pattern doesn't snatch souls any more than an ocean snatches water from a river.

1. At what time, exactly, are The Soul and the body united? For example, was the baby Caidal Cain a semen, a fetus, or a newborn when the Pattern took the adult Caidal Cain from TAR?

No way to know.

2. How will this affect the -certainly widespread- abortion discussion in Randland? Are you harming the Patter by aborting a fetus, if The Soul has been delivered? Or is it all just the will of the Pattern. Would you not be able to abort a baby up to the last week of pregnancy if the soul is delivered at the moment of birth? Do you think the Brown Ajah has panel discussions about these things?

The only harm you could do the Pattern is if you aborted someone who was supposed to be woven into great things. The Pattern would likely move to its backup hero, or maybe even protect the baby from the abortion.

3. Do the Gray Men and Women understand that they are probably giving up their chances of reincarnation for ever as they yield their souls to the DO? Or can a soul be reborn, even if it has been given to the Lord of Dark in one Age?

RJ said Grey Men's souls are "eaten". See my reply to Fanatic-Templar above and the link. I don't think a Grey Man understands much about the DO and their souls. They're stupid (even prior to becoming Shadowspawn they're stupid).

4. Why, then, does Ishamael not choose to become a Gray Man?

A good question. Maybe he's altruistic enough to want to free everyone from slavery to the Wheel, and becoming a Grey Man would be selfish in his mind. He should use his power and abilities to improve the lot of mankind.

Soul, reincarnation, abortion. Some questions that seem rather weird now. - 03/03/2010 07:47:08 PM 904 Views
