I say reread, but really I decided to download the audiobook and try it out. I couldn't bring myself to actually read the books.

Now, whilst I quite enjoyed The Eye of the World as a pleasant adventure, it's impressive that I managed to get to the end. More than anything else, the early dialogue in Emond's Field nearly drove me mad. It was largely how I imagine Little House on the Prairie to be (I never saw the programme), but turned up to eleven. Fortunately I was generally doing some kind of household task when listening, so I was able to zone out.

Obviously I've changed between the ages of 12 and 23. I've got one of them lit'rature degrees and everything, so the books weren't going to stand up in quite the way they used to. I've been wondering if I'm seeing even more flaws than I would have done if I'd gone into the books now without having read them before, rather than with an idealised preconception in my mind. Who knows?

What is interesting, though, is that despite finding the books, uhm, questionable in their quality, is the fact that I've kept listening. I'm on The Shadow Rising now, although I've been distracted by several other books lately (as an aside, I'm finding Tristram Shandy incredibly disappointing so far), and I've found myself considering all the old theories that used to bug me so much. I'm on the WoT board right now for that very reason. It doesn't make much sense, but the over-arching plot has got under my skin, which I think is pretty impressive.
