I think marriage is more than a piece of paper. It is the formal vows you give to each other of your love, trust, etc of the other person.

Besides that, it is a legal thing. If you aren't actually married, you cannot receive health benefits from your spouse. You cannot receive government benefits.

Finally, once you start a family, I think a marriage gives the children an inner security. That is just my opinion though.
