But then, a similar thing seems to be the case with Clinton - I get the impresion he is far more respected outside the US than he is within the US.

You only get one side of the picture. Americans only get one side of Blair, Brits and Europeans only get one side of Bush. Unless you actually live in the other, or regularly check multiple news sources it is very difficult to judge.
