The author took a decent starting idea and then proceeded to prove to us that he can't write worth a damn. All his characters were flat and unsympathetic, and rather than take the effort to develop real depth he threw around a bunch of stereotypical and archetypal references so that our own associations would fill the void he was unable to.

Not that they were very high up on my list of books to read, anyway.
