You might want to see some Oscar Wilde films. They seem to get them right quite a lot.

Having seen most of the film adaptations and having seen most of those plays preformed on stage, I would say that there is a sizeable difference. The films are not dreadful but they still fall well short of the plays.

It could be you don't have a thing for Colin Firth, Rupert Everett and Jeremy Northam?

I have quite the thing for said gentlemen (I could expand on this but this is a family board) and if they were to be appearing in a proper stage version of Earnest or an Ideal Husband I would first in line for tickets (they were all quite excellently cast). But the stage versions I have seen are simply superior, even if they lacked the acting talents of those film adaptations.

I would really like to have seen those stage versions.
You must agree, though, that the film versions are much above the quality of what Stephen seems to have experienced with King Lear...

They are decent versions, especially compared to what Stephen must have seen. The Beckett on Film adaptations (you mentioned Endgame below) also provided some good adaptations, so much so that I bought the boxset. But having seen several of those Beckett plays preformed by the same cast on both stage and screen I really feel that the stage versions work so much better.
