I finished Magician recently, and I'm looking for something else to read. Instead of raiding the book store and looking for something, I thought I'd ask which books you consider to be spectacular.
I'm not looking for a book that has any particular outstanding single characteristic such as a contrived plot, deep philosophy or detailed world-building. I'm looking for a book that destroyed your life for the time that you read it - because you couldn't put it down, and afterwards you put it down and went 'wow'.

Because if you don't, I would suggest Cryptonomicon by Stephenson. Or Red Mars by Robinson. Lord of Light by Zelazny is really good too. The Shadow of the Wind, by Zafon might fit the bill.
With more fantastic elements: The Secret History of Moscow by Sedia, or The Meq by Cash are interesting books which may or may not produce the result you ask for.
