Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
This is one of those books that is both light and fun to read, and critically acclaimed good literature - a lot like Possession that way.
Naguib Mahfouz, Children of the Alley
I've only read the first five or so chapters, but in my defense, I read them in Arabic.
Like Marquez (well, Cien Años de Soledad, anyway), I'm putting off reading more Mahfouz because I kind of feel like I should read in the original language, but have doubts about my ability to make it through the original versions. So either I'll give up at some point and just read them in translation, or I'll be brave and try the original version but take ages to get through them. Dilemma. Something tells me that the majority of people reading this will not have read the majority of the works mentioned, so hopefully this will inspire further exploration.
I've read one and five chapters of another, which is better than I'd have expected.
