Well, I never did aim to speak American English.

You mean, "I have never aimed to speak American English"?

No. I meant "I never did aim to speak American English".

Language is not fixed.

No it is not but I only pointed it out because it was glaringly awkward common American English. Tim clarified and as I said to Snoop it just makes it all the more interesting that something that seems so clear to British English looks so odd to American English. The joy of languages...

Indeed. It is what I like about them.
I can be a stickler about what I see as mistakes , but I love the fluid nature of language in general, expressions and how you can tweak them to change the connotations.

I started learning in school when I was 9. But most Norwegians know some English before then from television. And I am currently doing a PhD in English Literature in Scotland.

Yes, but your English is superb; beyond what most non-native speakers ever accomplish in my opinion. I have met many non-native speakers who have been speaking, reading, and writing English for many years that still miss many of the subtleties that you seem to catch.

Thank you. I have lived almost four years in Edinburgh, though; and it is my job to catch subtleties in language.
