Partly from being tired of hearing about it before I actually get around to seeing/ hearing/ reading it.
It also builds up an unrealistic expectation which it is highly unlikely to ever live up to, the knowledge of that is off putting.
Then there is additionally another factor with classics, which is that elements of them (style, interactions, plot twists etc) are likely to have been copied repeatedly since which can detract from the enjoyment of the original.

Ah yeah good point. Whatever book I read first for a particular way of doing stuff or whatever is then the one I think started it all never mind learning to the contrary. Reading things out of order bad?
