the only reason it is there is to keep Harry from the feast where everyone else is, making it possible (and plausible) for him to be first on the spot. Also, it gives some colour (hehe) of the ghost population.

I thought I had said that in my post as well (the first bit, not the colour bit). Guess I forgot to write down my thoughts. :P
