I don't see how it would be a problem to hide people rather than a house. The problem shows up later (in Deathly Hallows), where there are indications that it is the house that is hidden. But I imagine we'll get there when we get there. At the moment I think it is fairly unequivocally the Potters who are hidden, not their house.
....that the house was left standing, hidden from Muggles, as a memorial to James and Lily, whereas it was visible to Muggles before, and James and Lily were hidden.
So, James and Lily and baby Harry are hidden, in a visible house. Then the attack comes, Harry survives, and the house is badly damaged. Instead of knocking down or repairing the damaged house, they leave it as a memorial, and hide it. Does that make sense?
Nono. Those aren't the indications I was talking about. Here is the beginning of the discussion in the first thread. I think it makes sense for now to trace whatever indications one way or another we come across in either book, and deal with the Deathly Hallows stuff when we get to it.
