Malfoy's hand of glory is mentioned. I don't remember him having it before.
Me neither. Maybe this was meant to be new info for the reader, not a reminder?
And, just to check, Harry is right about Draco having the dark mark, right? I cannot remember whether he actually has it or is about to earn it.
I think so - what else would it be?
The usefulness of unvoiced spells keeps showing up. It was there at the end of the last book, during the fight at the ministry, and then pops up repeatedly in these chapters: Harry wishes he could do it when trapped in the carriage, and Snape dedicates the first lesson of the year to it.
And Hermione proves once again that she's not only highly intelligent, but also highly capable with magic - in classroom circumstances.
Then there is the reveal of the DADA job. I am a little … is confused the word? … on this point. Why did Dumbledore give it to Snape? What has changed? Except the fact that he needs Slughorn? Is it just that Snape is such a good potions master, with such excellent talents, Dumbledore has been reluctant to use him for anything else? In that case, the interpretation of it as a reluctance to let him have anything to do with the dark arts is clearly wrong, even though it seems to be the prevalent opinion at Hogwarts. I wonder to what extent Snape really wanted the DADA job -- he does LOVE potions. It seems to me that the DADA job thing is more of a substitute for Voldemort thing.
It all depends a bit on how seriously we should take the curse. Judging by that scene later in this book, it's quite real. In that case, and I admit I'm going out on a bit of a limb here, the answer is actually quite simple: Dumbledore didn't want to risk losing Snape before. Now he knows Snape will be gone before the end of the year anyway, so he decides to give him the job after all, which conveniently allows him to recall the former Head of Slytherin House, a known non-DE, in a (vain, as it turns out) attempt to try to lure some Slytherins back from the dark side.
Good point. That is the best explanation I have heard so far.
This is another indication that Dumbledore sometimes bases his staff decisions on totally different factors than finding the best possible teachers for his students, though (see: Trelawney, Sybil). Kind of bad form.

I think the prevalent opinion at Hogwarts is almost certainly wrong on this, there's no reason for it to be right. But no doubt it was convenient for Dumbledore to have that story believed - if Dumbledore was seen to trust Snape as solidly as he really does, Voldemort might have gotten suspicious about what Snape wasn't telling him.
Indeed.
