The "great" writers of Spanish literature are Lope de Vega, Cervantes, Borges, Marquez (much as I dislike him, I credit him that), de la Barca, and people of that stature.

I'm sure I could find interesting, even excellent, books in dozens of languages.


Arguedas is a small step below the ones you name (and that's only because he committed suicide, or else I'd imagine his output would be similar in depth to GGM). But what about Vargas Llosa or Fuentes? Or Carpentier? Then again, I don't read any of those in translation, so that's a moot point, I suppose

But Andri? I'd consider to be a must read, same for the Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz.
