Faulkner? Larry Send a noteboard - 16/01/2011 08:58:12 PM
2. Read a book by an author from a country you've not read a book from before.

Here I am a little stumped.

I think perhaps I haven't read anyone from Iran? Or really most of the Arab world. Any suggestions?

Ever read any of Naguib Mahfouz's work? His Cairo Trilogy books are his most famous, but almost anything would be well worth your time.

I have heard the name, but that is a good idea.

3. Read one Scifi, one Fantasy and one Spec Fic book (i.e. three separate books, and they can be books you've read before, if you like).

What distinguishes Spec Fic from Fantasy and Sci Fi? As I understand the term it is merely one that is wider, and encompasses the other two in addition to other stuff.

It is that, plus it's also a term for books that aren't placed in the SF/F section of stores, such as much of David Mitchell's work.

- Mystery

Do you mean crime? I wonder whether this is the time to finally pick up a Val McDermid book, but I am not sure it would fit the bill (never having read one before).

If it doesn't, perhaps I'll finally read the book where Poirot dies.

- Family chronicle

Here, again, I am having trouble thinking of a good one.

Ever read Allende's La casa de los espiritus? That would likely count. Or maybe Alcott's Little Women.

I have read both.

Faulkner's Snopes novels would be fitting: The Hamlet, The Town, The Mansion.
Illusions fall like the husk of a fruit, one after another, and the fruit is experience. - Narrator, Sylvie
