Either everything he did was right or he was justified and being wrongly persecuted/misunderstood. Modern Kvothe was interesting. Young Kvothe was a text-book Gary Stu.
It is *his* story after all, and *he's* telling it. Do you tend to paint yourself badly in the stories you tell?
It was still irritating to read. It's one thing to say that it's a deconstruction of the hero's journey or whatever, and it's another to play it straight for 800 pages. There's a certain point where it just becomes what it is pretending to be.
