the ability to wear a costume at a convention is hardly a ringing endorsement of a genre moondog Send a noteboard - 22/04/2011 01:49:40 AM
People enjoy steampunk because it allows them to go out to conventions dressed up in Victorian garb filled with gadgets. It's fun. If you think that's a backhanded compliment, then I sincerely feel sorry for you.

There are serious steampunk stories, I'm sure, but they are far and away the minority.

the way i see it, cyberpunk tends to deal with the everyday reality, and steampunk deals with a much more fantastical reality. in other words, steampunk has always struck me as escapist whereas cyberpunk is realist (not realistic, although it can be that as well). your comments so far have not disproven my impression of the steampunk genre

Why I prefer cyberpunk in near future settings to (most) of the steampunk sub-genre. - 19/04/2011 10:55:57 PM 1264 Views
The difference is that steampunk, by and large, is very aware of its implausibility. - 20/04/2011 01:32:57 AM 831 Views
You keep giving steampunk backhanded compliments like that and you'll start to confuse me. - 20/04/2011 02:12:53 AM 890 Views

IMO, cyberpunk has become somewhat dated. - 20/04/2011 04:46:55 AM 1066 Views
Actually, I can live with that, though terms like "dated" invite trouble. - 20/04/2011 07:01:50 AM 925 Views
