I'm gonna guess it varies widely. Legolas Send a noteboard - 13/06/2011 05:22:33 PM
I am constructing a course on Dickens, and so started wondering what I could expect people to have read. I would therefore be very happy if you could reply even if you haven't read anything.

Have you read any Dickens?

Yes.
What have you read?

Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.
Have you heard of any (other) Dickens novels?

I think much of this will echo Nate's list, he even reminded me of some I wouldn't otherwise have thought of... in more or less random order: Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Hard Times, David Copperfield, The Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, Nicholas Nickleby, The Mystery of Edwin Drood (that one is mostly just because of you, though :P ).
Why have you not read them?

I intend to, eventually. :P Too many books to read, too little time. The more books I read, the more I think of others I need to read - after all, if I read one book by an author and I like it, the author's other books make that much more additions to my ever-growing list.
What is your perception of Dickens?

A monument of British literature, Victorian, a lot of attention for poverty and hardship (his tone in Oliver Twist was very sharp indeed), forced happy endings. I think those are the main points.
Have you seen any film/series versions of Dickens' novels?

A Muppet Christmas Carol. :P Blame Angie. Otherwise, don't think so.
Pick one word that you connect with Dickens. What is it?

Victorian, I guess, with all the connotations that word has.
