Mostly because, well, the first couple of books just aren't as great as the later ones.
That is, they're still GOOD, but someone who is wondering why I'm a Pratchett fanatic would be a bit bemused as to why if they had only read Color of Magic, I think.
I think it's better to go back to those once you have an appreciation for Discworld.
