First off: I definitely agree that it has flaws.
However, it's really not twilight at all. It's a really fun adventure story in a dystopian setting. Yeah it has a lot of fans- it was published only 4 years ago and already there's a major movie. These books really took off, and for a reason: they're incredibly engrossing. There's flaws, but there's a lot that's great in it too.
Attractive teens- let me break this down. Teen- yeah it's about teenagers, that's in the plot. Attractive- it's hollywood, what do you expect? According to the books Katniss is supposed to have dark skin and be very plain, on the side of ugly. It's not just teenage insecurity, it's in the books: the adults around her mention more than once that her costume/make up has to be extra cra crazy to make her stand out and make up for her plainness "too bad you're not pretty" etc.
[There was some amount of outrage when Jennifer Lawrence was picked, it seemed like it was a role for a mixed race actress but instead we got a stunning blue eyed blonde who's going to dye her hair for the film and wear bronzer]
That said, it's for fun. I'm not gonna make you read it. If you're convinced that you won't enjoy reading it, then don't.
Interesting how divided opinion seems to be, other than that, wonder what I'll make of them myself.
From what I can tell the divided opinion is between people who've read the books and people who haven't.
Friend of mine (female, in her 20s, read Twilight too) loves the books, but I've also heard a lot of negative things and complaints about the series being the next Twilight (aka horrid crap). When I saw the first images from the film I knew why. Exclusively attractive teenagers in desperate situations. Not much there for people outside the target audience.
That being said, the trailer looks decent. If the first reviews aren't horrible, I plan to watch it.
