People may attack his style or, if they are particularly stupid, they may call him a racist and sexist imperialist oppressor. Regardless, there is a grudging respect that most have for The Lord of the Rings and its place in fantasy.

The only other series I might nominate would be the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis.
